What is a pediatric dentist?

A pediatric dentist is a general dentist who has undergone additional additional training to acquire skills in pediatric dentistry. He or she specializes in the oral health of children, from birth to late adolescence.

He treats with a pedagogical approach, putting himself within the child's reach to avoid frightening him, so as to make treatment easier. From the very first consultation, he establishes a relationship of trust with his young patients.

The dental hygienist is also responsible for prevention and teaching oral hygiene. He or she instills good hygiene and eating habits to help build and maintain healthy, attractive teeth.

FAQ

Our answers to your questions

The first visit to the dentist can take place within 6 months of the appearance of the first tooth, or around the age of 1. This meeting is an opportunity to explain to parents the future development of their child's teeth and the good oral health habits to adopt.

It's important for this first visit to be a simple contact, with no cavities to treat or injections. It allows the child to become familiar with the environment of a dental practice.

It's also important to reassure your child without passing on your personal fears.

After the first visit, we recommend that you visit the dental practice for check-ups once a year. These preventive visits enable us to check that the baby teeth are falling out properly, that the permanent teeth are coming in, and to prevent pathologies.

Assurance Maladie has created the M'T dents program, which offers dental appointments and treatment to children aged 3 to 12 and young people aged 15 to 24, every 3 years.

These appointments do not replace an annual check-up 😉

Although they are eventually replaced by permanent teeth (between 6 and 13 years of age, depending on the tooth), milk teeth are essential to a child's development.

Baby teeth :

  • for chewing and crunching;
  • are involved in phonation;
  • guide permanent teeth to grow in the right position;
  • define the child's face.

Tooth decay is an infection of the tooth. If left untreated, it can spread along the roots of the baby tooth, forming an abscess in the jaw.

The infection affects the child's general health and jeopardizes the germs of permanent teeth. Rarely painful, tooth decay in toddlers can go unnoticed. However, it is essential to treat them.

Milk teeth have a thinner outer enamel surface than permanent teeth, making them more vulnerable to tooth decay. To prevent tooth decay, we recommend adopting good dental and dietary hygiene habits from an early age.

  • Choose water rather than sugary drinks.
  • Don't let your child fall asleep after taking any liquid other than water. You should also be careful about taking medication in the evening (e.g. cough syrup).
  • It's essential to clean and brush baby teeth before bedtime.

Cleaning should start as soon as the first tooth appears, around 6 months of age. First, with a moist compress, then as the baby molars appear, with a first-age toothbrush impregnated with a trace of fluoride toothpaste adapted to the child's age.

Between the ages of 0 and 3, brushing should be carried out by parents twice a day, in the morning after breakfast and in the evening before bedtime.

Up to the age of 7-8, parental control is essential.

The beneficial action of fluoride against tooth decay has been the subject of a multitude of validated and reliable scientific studies.

While fluoride is an indispensable ally in good oral hygiene for children, this trace element is already present in some bottled waters, in tap water in some regions of France, in some table salts and in some dietary supplements...

To avoid overdosing, a complete fluoride work-up must be carried out.

Your pediatric dentist can tailor his or her fluoride recommendations to your child.

Non-nutritive sucking is a natural reflex in toddlers that responds to a psychological need and is a source of intense satisfaction.

This is not a problem before the age of 5.

Beyond that, prolonged sucking has consequences for a child's oral health. It leads to an imbalance in muscular forces in the oral area (lip and tongue), preventing balanced development of the maxillae and proper positioning of the teeth.

A few tips to help your child stop sucking his thumb:

  • Choose a period that is psychologically serene for him;
  • Plan a period of preparation and explanation, avoiding sudden bans;
  • Present the cessation of sucking in a positive light, projecting him towards the future: growing up;
  • Value his efforts;
  • Observe when he's sucking his thumb and suggest another activity to take his mind off it.

Fear of the dentist? Our solution for managing anxiety

Sedation reduces anxiety and emotional tension, and helps children with extreme fear of the dentist to receive dental treatment. The use of a sedative is reserved for anxious children, to enable them to take a step forward in their relationship with the pediatric dentist and dental care.

Mammadov uses conscious sedation, a mixture of pure oxygen and nitrous oxide: MEOPA. Formerly known as laughing gas, it considerably reduces anxiety and enables the patient to experience a state of relaxation.

The safest, most predictable sedation technique for dental treatment, MEOPA is delivered through a mask placed over the child's nose and mouth. As soon as inhalation stops, the effects wear off within 3 minutes.

Specializing in children's dentistry, our pediatric dentist is a caring professional who provides educational care and builds a relationship of trust with her little patients.

Don't hesitate to ask for more information. The professionals at Mammadov will be happy to answer your questions.
