What is neuromuscular dentistry?

Neuromuscular dentistry (NMD) is a science that objectively measures the functions affected by occlusion* and assesses the complex relationships between the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), teeth and masticatory muscles.

A poor occlusion can have many consequences for the patient's health.

The occlusodontist aims to rebalance the relationship between the upper and lower jaws so that the jaw joints and muscles relax.

Using high-tech equipment, he studies the patient's dental occlusion from resting position to dental contacts.

*Dental occlusion is the way in which the upper (mandibular) teeth mesh with the lower (maxillary) teeth. It is involved in the functions of breathing, swallowing, chewing, phonation, hearing and postural balance.

FAQ

Consult an occlusodontist to restore neuromuscular balance

Our team will try to determine whether your bite is pathological or not. Several tests help us make this diagnosis, following a questionnaire.

  1. Surface electromyography (EMG).
  2. This non-invasive method enables analysis of the neuromuscular system. It is called "surface", as the electrodes are placed on the patient's skin. It enables us to measure the muscular activity of your jaw.
  3. Record your jaw movements.
  4. Analysis of your posture.

If the occlusion is pathological, treatment is proposed. The aim is to correct the existing relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

This may require the involvement of several healthcare professionals.

  • Grinding of a few abnormal contact points in the case of a simple defect.
  • Invasive correction using orthotics. These are small, transparent resin wedges that the patient puts on and takes off himself. They must be worn day and night, except when eating. After fitting the orthoses, two check-ups are carried out at one-month intervals to verify and assess the results obtained.

After around 6 months, depending on the degree of correction achieved, a solution is proposed to permanently correct the relationship between the 2 jaws.

  • Bonding, crowns, bridges or removable braces, depending on the condition of your teeth.
  • Orthodontic treatment to correct tooth position.
  • A combination of these different treatments.
